Description
Otolaryngologists, particularly pediatric otolaryngologists, typically see on a regular basis a significant number of patients with complaints of sore throat, swollen glands, nasal congestion, earaches (including swimmer's ear), and upper respiratory infections. Most of these conditions do not require the care of an ENT specialist unless symptoms do not improve or complications ensue. These common medical conditions are generally well managed by primary care physicians and pediatricians. However, quite often patients want/need emergent evaluation and treatment of their symptoms on weekends and evenings. When their primary care physicians are not available during these times, many consumers will use their local emergency rooms for evaluation and treatment. Overuse and misuse of emergency rooms for noncritical, non-life-threatening medical care is a well-known problem that has crippled emergency room personnel in delivering emergent medical care to those who truly are in need. Solutions to these huge problems have been and still are being sought by those who manage healthcare and proponents of healthcare reform.
